Hold Tight

BOOK DESIGN | TYPOGRAPHY |  HAND LETTERING

This brief from Influx Press was for a new book cover and poster for a limited run of the 2017 paperback Hold Tight: Black Masculinity, Millennials and the Meaning of Grime by Jeffrey Boakye. Hold Tight explores the meaning of Grime music and why it has such resonance in the UK. Boakye also examines the representation of masculinity in the music and the media that covers it.

I led the project with a team of 4 other designers. We started our research in the home of Grime: the clubs of East London and took as our inspiration the graffiti on their toilet walls. From this graffiti I developed a hand lettering style carving themes and language from the book onto painted MDF. I then photographed the board to create the book cover and for one bespoke edition used the board itself to create a sleeve for the book.
